Sensational Seniors

paul-rosa.jpgRepeat broadcast on CTS Friday, March 5th, 11am (Ontario) and Saturday, March 6th, 1pm (Alberta).

February 2010  |  "A little Tony Bennett, a little Jimmy Durante, and even some Heny Youngman in there."

With a laugh, this is how judge Tim Louis describes the performance of 90 year-old Paul Rosa at the recent Senior Star finals held at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto. Heartthrob Rosa loves the attention, and his passionate croon had the audience cheering for more.

It's all part of a television show that The Shooting Eye had a big hand in producing.

Rosa is one of the 10 finalists who were selected from hundreds of seniors across Canada as part of Chartwell's third annual Senior Star competition. Chartwell is a leader in seniors housing throughout Canada and the US. Last spring many of their residences hosted regional auditions. Judged by Hee Haw's Gordie Tap, Lighthouse's Dan Clancy, and jazz singer Tim Louis, the best performers moved forward to the final competition in October, staged before a full crowd in the hotel's historic Concert Hall.

Titled Senior Star: You've Still Got It, the 90-minute program is a celebration of music and longevity. Shooting Eye worked with Forevergreen TV & Film Productions to help capture the show and tell the stories behind the top ten performers. One might describe it as an epic shoot, using seven cameras to film the live performance and a cross-country tour that took 2nd unit directors Jeremy Major and Aaron Lam (the two also helped produce and edit the program) to British Columbia to tell the back stories of the humble and talented seniors who would go on to sing their hearts out in Toronto. And for some, it didn't stop at singing. You'll see tap dancing, guitar playing, piano tickling, and well... lots of humour.

Senior Star airs Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 8pm on CTS.

Thanks to Alan Aylward at Forevergreen and the team at Chartwell for a great production.
