Hockey Doc Hits TV
And what interesting timing for its subject matter. For months and months, North Americans have been following the ups and downs of Jim Balsillie's quest to bring an NHL team to Hamilton. What many don't realize is that Hamilton once had its very own NHL team. Perhaps the reason many don't know is because it was some 84 years ago. But none-the-less, Hamilton had it. From 1920-25, the Hamilton Tigers scrapped away on the ice in an era of prohibition and gambling-ridden professional sports. Towards the end of the 1924/5 season, they moved on to become the NY Americans and Hamilton has only dreamed of their return ever since. A documentary called Hunting the Last Hamilton Tiger tells the story of Hamilton's NHL "Ghost Team" through the eyes of Ancaster businessman, Russ Boychuk. Russ is on the prowl for a long-lost Hamilton Tigers NHL team jersey that was last seen in a collectors shop in the city's North End. Where it is now, well... Russ is determined to find out. He's prepared to buy it and donate it to the Hockey Hall of Fame. His quest will not be an easy one and he will travel many kilometres in the process, but his passion to see a team return to Hamilton will carry him through. The one-hour doc airs on CBC Documentary Channel November 4, 2009 at 8pm. Directed by David Wesley and Produced by Derek Weidl, Edited by Jeremy Major and Aaron Lam. Post-Production Services by The Shooting Eye. For additional info, visit CBC Documentary.
